Broadband Internet Glossary

Cable.  A cable television system provides a number of analog television channels, some of which may carry digital television signals or data and other services.

Cable Broadband.  Cable broadband Internet access piggy-backs onto a pre-existing cable television system.

Cable Modem.  In a cable Internet connection, the cable modem is in the customer's premises, and is used to encode signals sent over the cable to the ISP and decode signals received from the ISP.

Cable Router.  A cable router is used in cable broadband Internet access to separate a customer's local network from the network operator's network.

Cable Speed.  The speed available from a cable broadband Internet access channel is often approximately 500 kbps.
