Broadband Internet Glossary

VDSL (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line).  VDSL (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line) is a DSL technology that allows broadband data services, including broadband Internet access, to be carried a hybrid optic fibre/copper pair telephone cable system.

VDSL Broadband (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line Broadband).  VDSL broadband (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line Broadband) allows broadband data services to be carried a hybrid optic fibre/copper pair telephone cable system.

VDSL Modem (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line Modem).  In a VDSL broadband Internet connection, the VDSL modem is situated in the customer's premises, and is used to encode signals sent over the VDSL channel to the ISP and decode signals received from the ISP.

VDSL Router (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line Router).  A VDSL router is used in VDSL broadband Internet access to separate a customer's local network from the VDSL network operator's network.

VDSL Speed (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line Speed).  A VDSL connection may provide a speed in excess of 10 Mbps on the downlink, with a similar speed available on the uplink.

VDSL Splitter (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line Splitter).  An VDSL Splitter is required in VDSL systems to all a broadband signal and a conventional telephone signal to be carried over the same channel.

VDSL Switch (Very high rate Digital Subscriber Line Switch).  A VDSL Switch is a switch that is integrated with a VDSL modem, and possibly other components supporting a VDSL connection.

VPN (Virtual Private Network).  A VPN (virtual private network) provides a secure, virtual tunnel between two network devices.
