xDSL (x Digital Subscriber Line). DSL (digital subscriber line) allows broadband data services, such as broadband Internet access, to be carried on conventional copper pair telephone cables. The x is replaced by a letter that defines the specific type of DSL system. xDSL Broadband (x Digital Subscriber Line Broadband). xDSL broadband (x Digital subscriber line) technology allows broadband data services to be carried on conventional copper pair telephone cables. xDSL Modem (x Digital Subscriber Line Modem). In an xDSL broadband Internet connection, the xDSL modem is in the customer's premises, and is used to encode signals sent over the xDSL channel to the ISP and decode signals received from the ISP. xDSL Router (x Digital Subscriber Line Router). An xDSL router is used in xDSL broadband Internet access to separate a customer's local network from the xDSL network operator's network. xDSL Speed (x Digital Subscriber Line Speed). The various xDSL connections provide different ranges of speed, and different tradeoffs between uplink and downlink speed. xDSL Splitter (x Digital Subscriber Line Splitter). An xDSL Splitter is required in DSL systems to all a broadband signal and a conventional telephone signal to be carried over the same channel. xDSL Switch (x Digital Subscriber Line Switch). A Broadband Internet is a switch that is integrated with an xDSL modem, and possibly other components supporting an xDSL connection.
