Information on Maximum Transfer Unit

The Maximum Transfer Unit is the maximum number of bytes that can be transferred in a single unit between two computers attached to an IP network. The Maximum Transfer Unit is associated with a complete path; the Maximum Transfer Unit of a path is the minimum of the Maximum Transfer Units of the individual links in the path.
For Ethernet, the Maximum Transfer Unit size is 1500 bytes. Where PPPoE is used, the Maximum Transfer Unit size is reduced by eight bytes because of the additional overhead.
