In the context of an RADSL broadband Internet connection, the Rate adaptive Digital Subscriber Line Modem is situated in the customer's premises, and is used to encode signals sent over the RADSL channel to the ISP and decode signals received from the ISP. The Rate adaptive Digital Subscriber Line Modem may provide different data rates on the uplink and downlink.
     The Rate adaptive Digital Subscriber Line Modem incorporates a handshaking protocol that is used to adapt the rate of the link when it is initialised.
