In the context of an ADSL broadband Internet connection, the
ADSL modem is situated in the customer's premises, and
is used to encode signals sent over the ADSL channel
to the ISP and decode signals received from the ISP.
The ADSL modem provides different data rates on the
uplink and downlink; usually a higher speed is provided on
the downlink.
Modem is a contraction of modulator/demodulator, which transforms a
digital bit stream into an analogue signal (in the modulator),
and vice versa (in the demodulator) so that the digital
signal can be passed over an analogue channel.
An advantage of
ADSL is that the ADSL modem is powered from
the same copper pair as carries the data, which means
that an ADSL link can operate even if the mains
power fails.
