A satellite communications system can be used for carrying
a wide range of communications services, including Internet acces, television
and telephony.
Satellites used for broadband Internet access are usually geostationary,
which means that they stay fixed over a particular point
on the earth's equator. This allows a fixed, parabolic antenna
to be used by customers to receive data from the
satellite.
In broadband Internet access, a satellite channel usually
provides only the downlink to the user—the uplink is provided
by a separate back channel, such as a telephone channel.
