Information on Second Generation Cellular

Second-generation cellular systems are based on digital communications technology. The major motivation for the development of second generation cellular systems came from the capability of digital communication systems to provide a wider range of services including voice, facsimile and data. Data rates up to 9.6 Kbps per radio channel are typically supported, with some systems allowing channel aggregation to achieve rates of up to approximately 100 Kbps. Circuit switching is used to provide all services. A connection must therefore be established before data is transferred, and that capacity allocated to a data connection cannot be reused if it is not used by that connection.
     CDMA is a second-generation cellular system.
