Information on Third Generation Cellular

Third-generation cellular systems will provide data rates up to 2 Mbps in areas of high population density, with rates reducing as a mobile station moves further from a base station. Satellite base stations will be used to provide coverage for mobile stations that are outside the range of ground-based network infrastructure. Both circuit-switched and packet-switched data will be supported.
One advantage claimed for CDMA is ease of transition to third generation cellular networks.
