Information on Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE)
Like the general packet radio services (GPRS), Enhanced Data Rates
for Global Evoluation (EDGE) is designed to work side-by-side with
existing GSM implementations. Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evoluation (EDGE)
introduces an optional 8PSK modulations scheme, making possible data rates
approximately three times higher than the guassian minimum shift keying
(GMSK) used by GSM and GPRS. EDGE provides management of
link quality control, automatically adjusting coding and modulation relative to
signal quality. Nine coding schemes are currently defined, giving data
rates between 8.8 and 59.2 Kbps per full rate traffic
channel. Automatic repeat request (ARQ) is also supported. Enhanced Data
Rates for Global Evoluation (EDGE) allows the retransmitted block to
have a more robust coding scheme applied to it.
