Information on Equalisation

A GSM receiver employs an adaptive equalizer to overcome the impact of non-ideal channel characteristics caused by multipath propagation. An adaptive equalizer is required because these channel characteristics are often fast changing. This equalizer is tuned for each time slot. The 26-bit training sequence in the middle of each burst provides a set of bits whose value is known in advance by the receiver and can be used for this purpose.
