GSM supports CCITT Group 3 facsimile, allowing transmission to or
from a mobile station that supports this service.
Source coding of
fax data is identical for conventional fax and mobile.
The
mobile service treats the fax data the same as other
non-voice data (i.e. for channel coding, modulation etc.)
Fax and data
services between mobile and fixed networks rely on the provision
of a suitable interface at the network boundaries. This interface
must operate differently for
voice (translation of source coding),
data
(provide modem and handshaking protocols), and
fax (provide modem
and fax handshaking protocols).
Data and fax handshaking protocols differ in
the first station to transmit - for data it is
usually the answering terminal, for fax it is the calling
terminal.
