SIMlock is used by GSM network operators to restrict the
operation of a mobile phone. SIMlock may be used to:
prevent the GSM mobile phone from operating with a different
subscriber identity module (SIM) from the one supplied,
prevent a
subscriber identity module from a different network operator from being
used in the phone, or
restrict the services that are available
using the mobile phone.
Preventing the GSM mobile phone from operating
with a different subscriber identity module (SIM) is a useful
protection against theft. A stolen mobile phone with SIMlock cannot
easily be sold, unless the thief is able to unlock
it, that is, remove the SIMlock.
