Information on GSM Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)

GSM mobile phones acquire their personality from a smart card known as the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM). All the access rights (including identification for billing) are based on the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), rather than the mobile phone itself. A Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) may be moved from one phone to another.
The Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) provides:

  • the international mobile subscriber identify (IMSI) ,
  • security functions, including authentication and key exchange, and
  • storage, for features such as frequently-used numbers.
