The GSM voice service provides toll-quality speech at a
data rate of 13.2 kbps in one full-rate traffic channel.
The difference between the usable data rate and the raw
channel data rate is used for carrying parity bits for
the GSM channel coding.
While the quality of the GSM voice
service is noticeably lower than that provided by an
ISDN telephone connection in the fixed network, it is still
usually judged sufficient to allow speaker recognition.
