The WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) aims to bring Internet
content and advanced data services to handheld wireless terminals (such
as a personal digital assistant (PDA)), including those with limited:
predictablility
of availability,
access bandwidth,
memory,
battery capacity,
computational capability,
input devices, and
display capability.
Like Internet-based
services, the wireless application protocol (WAP) is based on
a client-server model. The WAP (Wireless Application Protocol shares
many standards with conventional internet applications, but provides different standards
where they are required to support handheld wireless terminals.
The WAP application environment includes:
a standard naming model, based on URLs;
content
typing, where types are consistent with WWW typing;
standard content formats;
standard
protocols.
Efficiency of protocols over low-capacity wireless links is a
key WAP design driver.
