Information on PPI

The PPI is possibly the best known of all radar displays where the targets are shown in a plan format. The display, therefore, resembles a map with the radar site at the centre of the display. Range is indicated by displacement from the centre of the display and the radial displacement from the vertical represents the target’s azimuth angle.
     A variation on the PPI is called the sector PPI where only the relevant sector is shown on the display.
     A sector plan position indicator (sector PPI) is often employed by radars with extremely high antenna scan rates but limited azimuth coverage. An example of such a radar is a maritime patrol radar that may employ a sector PPI display when the radar switches from a 360o surveillance mode to concentrating on a specific sector in which a periscope is detected.
