Information on Radar Altimeter

A radar altimeter is used by an aircraft to determine its height above terrain. While a conventional altimeter uses air pressure to determine altitude, a radar altimeter determines height above terrain by using radar technology to measure the vertical distance between the aircraft and terrain.
A radar altimeter may be used as a component of a ground proximity warning system (GPWS).
