Satellite Communications Glossary

DirecTV Satellite Receiver.  A DirecTV satellite receiver takes the signal from a DirecTV satellite dish.

Forward Error Correction (FEC).  Using forward error correction the satellite communications receiver is able to correct errors itself without reference to the transmitter. It does this by using additional information transmitted along with the data and employing one of the error detection and correction techniques.

Globalstar.  Like Iridium, Globalstar provides global mobile telephony services. The Globalstar constellation consists of 48 LEO satellites, with an additional four satellites in orbit as spares. Globalstar offers the following services via a dual-mode handheld terminal: voice calling, Short Messaging Service (SMS), roaming, positioning, facsimile, and data transmission.

Iridium.  Iridium is an MSS system that provides global mobile telephony services using a constellation of 66 LEO satellites. The Iridium system uses on board switching and inter-satellite links to communicate between satellites.

Satcom.  Satcom is an abbreviation for satellite communications.
