Satellite Communications Glossary

Geostationary earth orbit (GEO).  In satellite communications, a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) is a special case of a geosynchronous orbit when the satellite’s period of rotation equals the Earth’s period of rotation, and the satellite is always positioned over the same location above the Equator.

Geosynchronous orbit.  In satellite communications, a geosynchronous orbit is a satellite orbit in which the period of rotation of the satellite is a multiple of the Earth’s period of rotation. W

Globalstar.  Like Iridium, Globalstar provides global mobile telephony services. The Globalstar constellation consists of 48 LEO satellites, with an additional four satellites in orbit as spares. Globalstar offers the following services via a dual-mode handheld terminal: voice calling, Short Messaging Service (SMS), roaming, positioning, facsimile, and data transmission.

Globalstar satellite.  A Globalstar satellite is one of 48 satellites in the Globalstar constellation.

Globalstar satellite phone.  The Globalstar satellite phone provides access to the Globalstar satellite communications system.
