Geostationary earth orbit (GEO). In satellite communications, a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) is a special case of a geosynchronous orbit when the satellite’s period of rotation equals the Earth’s period of rotation, and the satellite is always positioned over the same location above the Equator. Geosynchronous orbit. In satellite communications, a geosynchronous orbit is a satellite orbit in which the period of rotation of the satellite is a multiple of the Earth’s period of rotation.
