Information on Explorer I

Shortly after Sputnik, the US Army launched the first US artificial satellite, Explorer I, on 31 January 1958 by the US Army. Explorer was a 2-m, 14-kg cylinder that remained in an orbit between 360 km and 2,550 km for nearly five months. Among the equipment carried by Explorer was a Geiger counter that led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts around the Earth.
