Iridium is an MSS system that provides global mobile
telephony services using a constellation of 66 LEO satellites. The
Iridium system uses on board switching and inter-satellite links
to communicate between satellites rather than the traditional bent-pipe approach
adopted by most satellites, including the more-recent MSS system, Globalstar.
Iridium therefore requires complex and expensive satellites.
Iridium peripherals
include the Motorola 9505 portable phone, the Motorola 9570 portable
dock, the Motorola 9500 portable phone, and the Motorola 9501
portable pager. Other products include: Motorola 9522 L-Band Transceiver, Aerodata’s
AeroPhone®, AirCell AST 3500, and AIRSAT 1 single channel satellite
communications system.
