Relay I was an early satellite communications system. Relay
I was launched by NASA on 13 December 1962
into an orbit between 1 310 km and 7 360
km with 47.5 degree inclination. Relay was a 78-kg, one-way
repeater designed to demonstrate that a satellite could provide wide-band,
multi-channel FM voice communication. Relay remained in orbit for over
a year with a 14-MHz bandwidth transponder using an uplink
frequency of 1.725 GHz, a downlink frequency of 4.170 GHz
and an output power of 10W.
