Information on COTS

COTS products are non-developmental items that already exist and can be readily procured. Most often designers are keen to use COTS items (if suitable) because they are invariably cheaper and less risky than developmental items. The suitability of COTS items is often assessed early in the design through the use of an appropriate prototype of the system or subsystem. While there are considerable advantages to using commercial off the shelf items, the systems engineering effort must ensure that the requirements for reliability, maintainability, robustness, and so on, are being met.
