Information on NDI

A NDI incudes any item that does not require development as part of the Acquisition Phase for this system development because it already exists, as a commercial off-the-shelf product, or as a product developed for another system. A non-development item can be used without modification or may be modified to meet the requirements of this system. The suitability of a NDI is often assessed early in the design through the use of an appropriate prototype of the system or subsystem. While there are considerable advantages to using a NDI, the systems engineering effort must ensure that the requirements for reliability, maintainability, robustness, and so on, are being met.
