Information on Need Statement

The need statement is a concise statement of need describing the goals or objectives of the system development. The need is articulated in the User Requirements Document. A system must meet some defined need which must be clearly stated at the outset. The need statement is developed in conjunction with the key stakeholders and provides a single concise sentence that contains a word or phrase for every key aspect of the system. In that way, the need statement begins the hierarchical top-down analysis of system requirements.
The need statement also serves as the ultimate test of the system’s fitness for purpose once it is introduced into service.
