Information on Preliminary Design

Preliminary Design (the second of the Acquisition Phase activities in the systems engineering process) converts the functional baseline from Conceptual Design (the ‘what’ of the system) into a preliminary definition of the system physical architecture (the ‘how’). Preliminary Design therefore represents a conversion of the functional design (system-level functional architecture) into a physical design (subsystem-level physical architecture).
Preliminary Design establishes an Allocated Baseline and ensures traceability between the Allocated Baseline and Functional Baseline.
