Team Building Glossary

Scientific Management. Scientific management is very rational and very control-oriented. It tried to make the work world predictable, with as little variation as possible.

Self-Directed Teams (SDT). Key distinguishing characteristics setting Self-Directed Teams (or self-directing teams) apart from other forms of work teams and groups include their high levels of shared purpose, self-coordination and direction, accountability, and inter-reliant and synergistic operation.

Self-Managing Team. Self-managing team is another term for a self-directed team.

Shared Leadership. A key and often-neglected factor in empowerment is shared leadership. As an evolving and increasingly capable team has diminishing need for external direction, it begins asserting its own leadership. Team members influence one another

Silo Paradigm. The term "silo paradigm" refers to the tendency of operations to be functionally oriented.

Skills and Knowledge. Skills and Knowledge is an element of the high-performance team charter.

Skills and Knowledge Matrix. A Team Skills and Knowledge Matrix can take many forms, which can be adapted as needed. Each Skills and Knowledge Matrix will be different due to the range and variety of work teams do.

Skills Training. The Team Collaboration Inventory (TCI) is an assessment of team behaviours that, in the aggregate, point to the orientation or inclination toward teamwork.

Socio-technical Systems. Sociotechnical Systems--Origin and Development. A Sage Publications White Paper on the origin and development of sociotechnical systems.

Sociotechnical Systems (STS). Sociotechnical Systems are based on the concept that work could be more fulfilling and productive if responsibility for complete pieces or processes could be allocated to intact work groups.

Straight Talk. Straight Talk is one of the nine dimensions of the high-performance team wheel.

Strategic Leadership. Strategic leadership is the highest level of leadership and has a strategic (global, regional, national, and societal) perspective.

Successful Leadership. Successful leadership requires an understanding of the nature of leadership, and a resolve to develop continually the skills required for leadership.
