What is the role of Leading teams in Self-Directing
Teams? The term Self-Directed Teams implies self-leadership. Managing SDTs seems
a contradiction in terms. While it may sound contradictory or
confusing, the need for management and leadership is as strong
in team organisations as it is elsewhere, if not more
so. The roles for leaders do change, as will be
explained in more detail later on.
In general, these roles include:
adjusting
organisational structures and supports for collaborative work processes
monitoring and mediating
environmental factors that effect internal operations.
Leading teams concerns the
level and focus of direction a team expresses. Team members
may share leadership amongst themselves or rely on a designated
leader. Wherever it resides, leadership is important in channelling team
energy and efforts, and in helping to work through conflicts
and problems. Conspicuously absent from the High-Performance Team Wheel is
“the leader,” as most important aspects of leadership are contained
in the nine dimensions and can effectively&mhash;at least in theory—exist
without a formal authority or designated leader.
