"Mutual Support and Coaching" is one of the nine dimensions of the high-performance
team wheel.
Mutual Support and Coaching centres on shared responsibility
for the care, development, and on-going performance of individual team
members so that they can become and remain productive and
fulfilled members of the team. Issues traditionally given over to
leaders or managers to deal with are dealt with effectively
within the team.
The team has a dedicated learning and
improvement agenda. Performance improvements and development plans are a matter
for the team, at least in part; not exclusively [hidden]
agreements between a manager and an employee. Team members know
what needs to be done and have a plan for
doing it. Team members ask for and volunteer help. They
help one another achieve success.
Teams scoring low on the "mutual
support and coaching" dimension may exhibit a peaceful, unproductive
coexistence, exemplified by the statement, "don’t bother me and I
won’t bother you." You might also see turf battles and
competition at the expense of collaboration and teamwork. You may
see covert blaming and criticism, while not raising issues to
the individual concerned.
