A key and often-neglected factor in empowerment is shared leadership. As an evolving and increasingly capable team has diminishing
need for external direction, it begins asserting its own leadership.
Team members influence one another. They innovate and change things
for the good of the team and the organisation. They
communicate to external leaders what kind of leadership they need.
They make decisions and take actions that lead the team
to greater productivity and quality.
Their need for leadership does
not disappear. The kind of leadership they need does, however,
change, respective of the phase of development the team is
in and immediate circumstances. For example, teams often need tighter
leadership and direction during periods of great change or stress.
Their need for external leadership will lessen, again, once conditions
stabilise.
