Information on Skills and Knowledge Matrix

A Skills and Knowledge Matrix is a tool used in assessing and tracking the skill and knowledge development of all members of the team with respect to all of the skill and knowledge areas required by the team to fulfil its current and prospective tasks. The Skills and Knowledge Matrix is used to develop team and individual learning plans.
A Team Skills and Knowledge Matrix can take many forms, which can be adapted as needed. Each Skills and Knowledge Matrix will be different due to the range and variety of work teams do. In general, the Matrix should include both technical skills and team-relevant administrative and management skills. Facilitation, mentoring, and project management are examples of these latter skills.
Capacity building for the future is a second factor in what a team will include in its Skills and Knowledge Matrix. A team must consider how new and shifting work will affect its learning needs. Finally, individual team members’ career development areas must be given weight in Team Learning Plans, and inclusion on the Matrix is one way to keep these needs in the forefront of team thinking.
