The Team Charter is a document completed by team
members, themselves, with the assistance of the facilitator or Team
Leader. It forms a permanent record of the team’s primary
obligations and commitments. Documenting the "whats" and "hows" of team
work, and sometimes the "whys", the Team Charter is
an essential and practical team-building tool. The team chartering process
builds alignment. Having teams work through the various parts of
the team charter ensures that they have dealt with
core aspects of the team, including its purpose, goals, and
measures of success. The dialogue surrounding roles and responsibilities, risks,
Critical Success Factors, and working together, and their enumeration in
the Team Charter help team members understand one another,
build a unique team identity, and forge a team that
is aligned in breadth and depth.
Two main purposes of the
Team Charter and chartering activity are to build alignment
and create buy-in at the team level. High-performance Teams require
a high degree of alignment, or agreement, among team members
concerning the team and its responsibilities. The process of chartering
produces that alignment. At the same time, the process increases
commitment to fulfilling the requirements set out for the team.
The Team Charter, then, ensures that everyone is "playing
from the same sheet of music", as they say, overcoming
some of the typical problems experienced by many teams.
