The AF Amplifier stage develops sufficient AF
power to operate the loudspeaker, handpiece or other output device.
After detection the signal level will be approximately 100 µW,
which must be amplified to the required audio power level.
For portable receivers with a power output of approximately 100
mW, a gain of around 30 dB is required. In
larger console receivers the audio output may be 100 W
and gains in excess of 60 dB are required. The
AF Amplifier stage will include a volume
control and sometimes treble and bass controls. A squelch or
muting facility may also be included.
