Information on Automatic Gain Control (AGC)

The strength of the wanted signal will fluctuate because of changes in propagation conditions. A receiver therefore includes automatic gain control (AGC) to maintain the signal at the input to the detector at a constant value despite fluctuations in the signal strength at the antenna. Automatic gain control (AGC) ensures that the operator hears a reasonably constant volume as the propagation conditions change, or as the receiver is tuned from one station to another.
