Transmitters and Receivers — IF Breakthrough

Information on IF Breakthrough

If a signal at the intermediate frequency (IF) is allowed to reach the mixer, it will also appear within the pass band of the IF amplifier and interfere with the wanted signal. This effect is known as IF breakthrough. The RF stage therefore includes an IF trap, which is tuned to the IF and shunts the unwanted signal to earth.
